If there is one area of law that needs to be rexamined, it is copyright law. It was initially meant to protect starving artist who did not benefit from their work. Writers, song-writers, movie makers, screen writers, singers, recording artist .... the list is long, but it was intended to protect the performing arts.
Singers, believe that they own the rights to their material, song, in perpetuity. The song writer gets about .07 cents for his part. The other .93 cents is distributed among a lot of people with a big chunk going to the Super Star. Beyonce, Mariah, Gloria Estefan, make a few bucks. Now I have more than one of their records and I listen to their music on the radio and watch them on TV. But even the King, Elvis, did not have 100% hits ..... not every one of his recordings was a jewel. And I have bought more than a few Elvis records, not as many as my wife, but enough to keep him alive.
I downloaded a song from iTunes ..... very popular, "it was a night" oh what a night it was it was such a night. Damn I love this song and cant help but get happy as soon as it starts. Other people recorded it but, not like Elvis. I like the movie Graceland, because they play the song throughout the movie, its a good movie, but it is a great movie because of the song.
I have the movie in the old VHS tapes and it has had lots of play. I dont regret ever buying it. So why cant I duplicate my movie in a CD so I can keep enjoying it. I mean Elvis is dead, I've been to Graceland three times, I've bought the CDs, the 45s, the Albums. Hell we made Elvis rich beyond his wildest dreams but fame got the better of him. All those wild women chased him to his grave.
Now his kin are still getting money, why is that. What do we the American Public get out of this. We pay sales tax, income tax, congressman tax, senator tax, president tax, governor tax, property tax, phone tax, poison control tax, gasoline tax, the list is long. How much of our little bit of money do we have to pay to Elvis, the ghost. Hell if his family wants more money than they got shouldnt they work for it.
So poor people do what they can to own a piece of this pie, they get it illegally, they download it, they copy it. Then we have the pirates, they want their cut, so they make lots of copies and sell them at the swap meets.
Now they put an FBI warning on the movies so you dont reproduce them. No, to threaten you. So what about my old VHS, the technology has gone and left and now I have hundreds of these and no player. I bought them, and they belong to me, with all the rights and privileges of ownership. They make millions of dollars from the movies and in some cases billions. Yes, I own the posters, the little stuff animals, the plastic spaceships, isnt that enough.
Now my wife owns one of the Tom Jones tour jackets, it doesnt fit her, but hell she must have it hidden somewhere. We paid big bucks to fly hither and tither so she could see this man. Everybody made money off of this.
These people are treated like royalty. The copyright laws do not even consider the American Public, thats right we even pay an FBI tax, those bastards, those black booted thugs make a lot of money. Between them and the courts they chase people down because they downloaded an illegal copy. Meanwhile the SOBs at the Securities and Xchange Commission are sitting on their ass, while the country is getting robbed and going bankrupt.
I found some recordings by the Air Force and Navy band made during world war II and they are copyrighted by somebody. We paid for the Air Force, the Navy, the War and now we have to pay for the music the bands recorded. Most of the band members are dead.
You know the fee for copyrighting a poem is $40 dollars. So the copyright tax is expensive. Then the movie people infringe on copyrights when they make movies. But you know those SOBs in congress they want their bribe tax.
Is there anyone in DC that looks out for the little guy. No not Mitt, not Paul, not Sarah, not McCain, lets give them the one finger salute!
