I have just cut down a dead dry bush. This bush was green with tiny red balls. The barbs are long and sharp, they will go through the glove and your shoe. These bushes, are big, they are not edible.
After I cut it I could not help but notice the wood, beautiful. Like a chocolate soft swirl ice cream, xcept wood. I peeled the bark off and the two colors of wood seem to lose integrity where they meet. The branches have sudden sharp turns and this permits the bush to make a tight web.
It appears that one color xpands more than the other and that is why the branch turns, just like a bi-metal thermostat wire. It also appears to intussuscept, they grow inward taking the bark and come out another part of the branch. The branches begin to hollow.
The wood is dry and brittle and even thick branches can be easily broken. It can be seen to torque in some areas, if you have ever had a heart attack, the pain radiates to your neck and left arm and it feels like your neck is being wrung.
The joints seem to have spurs. It has one big nodule on the brown side that looks like the hypothalamus,
Tomorrow I will sand it, oil it, fill some of the hollows with wood putty, than use an xterior varnish. Those areas that may look weak structurally, I will wrap with copper tubing. Then I will place it between the Bird of Paradise and the window.
I really believe this is a hybrid, the two grew together then separate. It seems very much like a symbiotic state.
Oh and before I forget, lets me tell you about the time a giant pine cone fell and hit my wife on the head. Its as big as a small football. When my grand daughter was a kid I would tell her about the near death xperience.
Shiver me timbers!
