There must be a reason why there is no silver in our coins? There use to be. Whose idea was it to take it out? If we put silver back in our coins would that help the economy....hell yes. A silver dollar coin, about one ounce has a silver value of about $27 dollars. The thing is that if you dont use it for money you can use it for other things, silver has so many uses.
When our troops landed in Tripoli, some carried a silver dollar as a good luck charm. The natives would take that dollar and pound it into a one of a kind ring. Mexico that 3rd world country run by the mafia, still has silver coins, they have no denomination, so the value of the coin is posted every day.
Up until 1865 Mexican silver dollars were the coin of the realm, not just in the United States but in Canada. You might remember 2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits a dollar. So there were 8 bits in a dollar, 2 bits in a quarter and 1 bit was 0.125 or 1/8. To this day our stock market uses the 1/8 increment for pricing. In fact the Spanish real was demarcated into 8ths, in case you needed less money you could easily, cut it into its parts.
So the Mexicans still have silver coins and the US has no copper for their pennies, the pennies are made of zinc and painted with copper. An attempt to deceive, perhaps. Copper has gone up in price, a lot. Thieves were making away with power lines, plumbing from public schools, and selling the spoils. Thieves are also busy stealing catalytic converters....the environmental component in a car. The rodium and platinum in the converter was worth about $1000 dollars.
So why dont we have silver in our coins.....because somebody is stealing it. I have previously proposed that we eliminate the penny, especially since it cost about 0.04 cents to make one. Since our students today are innumerate, it cost us billions of dollars in lost time, making change. The nickel doesnt do any better it cost about 0.07 cents to make.
You remember those Sacajawea dollars, they have millions of them warehoused because people didnt want them. So Im sure this cost taxpayers a pretty penny.
I also proposed that we recycle, taking our old brass, old keys, and recycling them, we would eliminate the need to buy copper paint for our pennies. Brass also minimizes germ colonization that is why door knobs and kick plates are made of brass. So if my city sends 20 tons of brass to the mint, the mint can turn it into coins and send us that equivalent in coins. We would save the cost of buying copper about $3.00 dollars a pound.
This would create jobs, save money, and inch us out of this depression.
What do you think, Sarah?
